What is MJPJAY?

The Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) is Maharashtra’s state health insurance scheme, run by the State Health Assurance Society. It covers hospitalisation for cancer, cardiac disease, kidney conditions, neurosurgery, and other serious illnesses – cashless, at empanelled hospitals across the state, including Onco-Life’s centres in Satara, Chiplun, Talegaon, and Wagholi (Pune).

Key benefits

  • No cash needed for approved procedures at empanelled hospitals
  • Up to ₹1.5 lakh per family per year (₹2.5 lakh for kidney transplants)
  • Covers 1,000+ procedures across oncology, cardiology, orthopaedics, nephrology and general surgery
  • 900+ empanelled hospitals statewide
  • Diagnostic imaging and pre-/post-hospitalisation follow-up included

Eligibility Criteria for MJPJAY

  • Maharashtra residents with a valid Aadhaar or ration card
  • Yellow or Orange Ration Card (low-income/BPL) holders
  • Farmers from 14 government-identified distressed districts
  • Accredited journalists (under the state’s Directorate of Information and Public Relations)
  • Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) registrants

You’ll need: Aadhaar, income certificate or ration card, proof of residence, a doctor’s referral, and a hospital estimate if applicable.

What’s Covered – And What Isn’t

MJPJAY covers a wide range of medical and surgical conditions across specialties, reducing financial burden for essential treatments such as chemotherapy cost in Pune.

Specialities and Examples of Covered Treatments

  • Oncology (Cancer — Free Treatment Under MJPJAY): Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, cancer surgeries, with referral pathways to experts such as a lung cancer specialist in Mumbai when required.
  • Cardiology: Angioplasty, CABG, cardiac device implantation.
  • Nephrology: Dialysis, kidney transplant, chronic kidney failure management.
  • Orthopaedics: Joint replacement, fracture fixation, spine surgery.
  • Neurosurgery: Brain tumour removal, spinal disorder treatment.
  • General Surgery: Appendicitis, hernia, gallbladder surgery.
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology: C-section, hysterectomy, ovarian cyst removal.
  • Paediatrics: Neonatal care, congenital defect surgeries.

What MJPJAY Does NOT Cover

  • Cosmetic or aesthetic surgeries
  • Organ transplants other than kidneys
  • Infertility or fertility treatments

Note: MJPJAY and Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) are separate schemes. In Maharashtra, MJPJAY is administered independently. Eligible beneficiaries may benefit from both. Always confirm with your hospital’s MJPJAY helpdesk.
