Haematology-oncology includes such diseases as iron deficiency anaemia, haemophilia, sickle cell disease, the thalassemia, leukaemia and lymphomas, as well as cancers of other organs.

Anaemia

Hemophilia

Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder that is caused by an altered gene in the body. It requires extreme care in the hands of Hematologists to treat this disorder which is a result of low levels of the Factors that cause clots. Since the bleeding is not just because of any injury or trauma and can occur without any obvious cause, specialized treatment is needed instantly to help the blood clot normally to stop the bleeding.

Thrombosis

The blood in our body flows freely through our arteries and veins. While our arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body, the veins transport blood from the body to the heart. When there is an obstruction or clot in the blood vessels it causes a whole lot of complications to the blood supply. This clot or thrombus formation is called Thrombosis.

Myeloma

Myeloma is a type of blood cancer caused from plasma cells. When DNA is damaged during the development of a plasma cell, it leads to myeloma. The cells then starts to multiply and spread within the bone marrow. The abnormal plasma cells release a large amount of a single type of antibody – known as para-protein which has no useful function.

Lymphoma

Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system. It affects a type of white blood cells. These help fight disease in the body.They play a crucial role in the immune system. This type of cancer begins in the white blood cells, known as ‘lymphocytes’. As it is present in the bloodstream to different parts of the body. This is known as metastasis.

Leukemia

Leukemia is a rare blood disorder affecting less than a million people per year in India.There are no preventive measures for leukemia known yet. Fast developing leukemia can be diagnosed depending on rapid onset of typical symptoms of frequent infections, tendency to bleed or bruise easily, fatigue, and weight loss. But, many suffering from it may not have symptoms.
